In 2000, Baltimore Life continued to evolve toward excellence. We once again set a new sales record, with a 26 percent increase in weighted premium. Perhaps most importantly, we accomplished this growth while also bearing substantial one-time expenses, including a significant investment in new technology. This investment will help us realize gains in efficiency, reduce unit costs and enhance customer service. It was not a year of sweeping reinvention, but one of careful enhancement and measured modification of initiatives already undertaken and proven successful. Strategic alliances, an important business focus for several years now, remain vital components of our success. To afford even greater flexibility for new partnerships and growth, Baltimore Life became a mutual insurance holding company at the end of 2000.
